Lalle Larsson - Piano
Thomas Widlund - Marimba
Performing the piece Puppets at Dunkers Kulturhus in Helsingborg, Sweden 2004.
"In the early 2000´s I composed several duets for piano and marimba.
Inspired by the rhythmic creativity of composers Conlon Nancarrow and Carl Stalling (Looney Tunes cartoons) I wrote several pieces with this sound in mind. This piece in particular - Puppets - was written away from the piano so I composed freely without limiting myself, without thinking about how hard it would be to actually play.
I was so blessed to have met the amazing marimba soloist Thomas Widlund who was prepared to spend hours and hours learning my pieces. I can´t thank him enough for the time and inspiration he gave me. Every score that I threw at him he gracefully accepted as a challenge.
Still, almost twenty years later, the piano and marimba duets are the most complex scores I ever performed in front of an audience. Today I wouldn’t even dare to look at the scores, let alone try to play it.
The clip you are about to hear is far from a perfect performance of Puppets but then again we only got to do very few concerts with the duo. Unfortunately we never got the opportunity to do a proper recording of these pieces, these live recordings is all that exists.
Now I´m sharing it with you. Hope you enjoy it. /L"
