Present Continuous Tense
This tense is also known as progressive tense.
The verb here shows an action or event in progress.
This tense is formed with the help of the present tense of the verb to be
(is, are, am) + Present Participle root verb + ing
So, the structure looks like: subject + verb to be + Present Participle
Examples:
1. I am writing -- We are writing.
2. (Singular) You are writing - (Plural) You are writing.
3. He/She is writing -- They are writing.
Negative is formed by adding not with the helping verb.
Structure: Subject +Helping Verb + Not + Verb + ing (Present Participle)
Examples:
I am not writing. We are not writing.
You are not writing. They are not writing.
He/She is not writing.
Interrogative is formed by bringing the helping verb before the subject.
Structure: Helping verb + Subject + Verb + ing (Present Participle)
Examples :
1. Am I writing -- Are we writing?
2. Are you writing - Are they writing?
3. Is he/she writing -
Uses of Present Continuous Tense
Action in progress at the time of speaking. It describes what is happening now.
Examples :
1. The baby is sleeping.(now)
2. It is raining. (now)
2. Used for a temporary action - That may not be happening now.
Examples :
• I am working on a science project.
• She is preparing for IAS.
3. Continuous tense is also used to describe plan or action in near future.
Examples :
1. I am quitting this job next month.
2. They are shifting to new office soon.
3. My mother is starting cooking classes this week.
Note:
It is important to mention a time frame of the future action i.e.
Next month, soon, this week etc
Now look at these sentences:
I am going to learn French.
You are going to regret your decision.
My father is coming to pick me up.
When we use verbs like; go and come as a part of the helping verb, it is not necessary to use the time frame. The verbs of perception, appearing, emotion and thinking are not used in continuous form. With them simple present is used.
Have a look at these examples:
Incorrect Correct
I am seeing two birds. I see two birds.
It is seeming to be dark. It seems to be dark.
The train is appearing to be late. The train appears to be late.
I am wanting red colour. I want red colour.
I am hating liars. I hate liars.
Such verbs if used in continuous forms mean deliberate action.
Examples:
• Why are you smelling the dish?
• The police is watching the house.
• The following sentences further explain the use of present continuous tense.
• I am preparing for my exam tomorrow. (now)
• My sister is coming from the US this Sunday. (Future)
• My guests are leaving next week. (Future plan)
• I am reading a collection of poetry by Wordsworth. (These days)
• I hear someone coming. (verb of perception used in simple present but meaning now)
