For TV’s first adult western in 1955, producer Louis Edelman cast Hugh O’Brian as WYATT EARP and adhered very close to fact over fiction. It became a giant success. So, what’s a smart producer like Lou to do? Come up with a companion TV series based on another famous American that’s what!
THE ADVENTURES OF JIM BOWIE starring Scott Forbes as Bowie premiered Sept 1956. Wyatt had his Buntline Special. Bowie had his namesake knife. Since the “authentic” series was set in Louisiana Territory during the 1830s, no one was carrying six-guns in tied down holsters. People were still using muskets and flintlock pistols. So, Bowie carried his famous Bowie knife. It wasn’t your normal knife but an extra-large weapon that Bowie designed and used instead of pistols. In fact, he carried two of them, in a double holster rig. And he was great at throwing them. So great that he was inspirational to a whole group of growing young boys who took up throwing knifes. Ahh, the 50s.
Of course, the series has a catchy theme song that you’ll all be singing. In fact, there is singing all the way through each episode of this series. Ken Darby leads the King’s Men, and they hum the background music. It’s a little disconcerting, but it had worked well for Lou Edelman’s other hit, Wyatt Earp, so he uses the same unique, and money saving, scoring style for the Jim Bowie series.
This episode, “Pearls of Tampico,” is from the 2nd season and the guest star is none other than June Carter Cash before she married Johnny. She’s cute and has a realistically thick Southern accent. So does 6’ 2 ½” Scott Forbes as Jim Bowie. I grew up thinking he must have been a football player from Texas. Wrong! He was born Conrad Scott-Forbes in England! He sure had me fooled. Regis Toomey, Ted de Corsia, Malcom Atterbury and X Brands are also featured in this episode.
