Arizona is a strange place. But this volcanic mystery might be the strangest part of a state full of oddities. There are hundreds of volcanoes in Arizona, but they don't make sense. They really shouldn't be here at all. Most volcanoes pop up along fault lines and areas with a lot of seismic activity. But Arizona isn't near any fault, which makes the hundreds of volcanoes all the more perplexing. The biggest of them all, the San Francisco Mountain, used to be over 16,000 feet tall. But this stratovolcano collapsed and lost a huge chunk of its impressive height. So, what happened? I hike 15 miles through the remains of this volcano to discover the landscape with new eyes.
