When you save an image in .xcf format in GIMP, it saves all of the image's layers, channels, paths, and other information in a single file. This allows you to easily open, edit, and re-save the image later without losing any of your work. The .xcf format is also useful for sharing images with other GIMP users, as they can open the file and access all of its layers and other data.

It is important to note that the .xcf format is not suitable for use outside of GIMP, as most other image editing software and web browsers do not support this format. If you need to use the image elsewhere, you will need to export it to a different file format, such as .jpg, .png, or .gif.'
