Multiple drugs are often used in clinical practice because patients frequently present with multiple chronic diseases. Several medications are frequently administered concurrently to improve drug adherence. Although this may be a preferred clinical strategy, administering two or more drugs at the same time increases the possibility of drug-drug interactions. As the risk of drug-drug interactions rises, so does the risk of debilitating, even fatal, adverse drug events.
This pharmacology lecture discusses various mechanisms of CYP450-mediated drug-drug interactions including competitive, non-competitive and irreversible inhibition.
