This once great country has become a shining example of how to destroy a nation.
If you have been watching YouTube you may have seen hundreds of videos of people leaving Canada. "I hate it here" "I can't get ahead" are common statements. And these are the people who can afford to leave Canada. When 1 in 5 single Canadians are living in Poverty, and the use of emergency foodbanks is up 78% from 2019, of which almost 20% are working people, many can't afford to eat properly never mind leaving the country.
Let's start with housing. Let's say you want to buy a house. You aren't rich, so decide to buy a fixer-upper. Here is a home that is a bit dated and needs new siding and new garage doors, The inside has old carpeting, the rooms are small, and the lot is tiny. You should be able to afford this, right? Today, in the paradise of Canada, 1010 West 54th Street in Vancouver can be snapped up for the bargain price of 5.5 million dollars. Then you have to update, which is another 500k easily, and your annual property taxes are $18,780.
That's a fixer-upper. What if you have a successful business, or you won the lottery, and you want to buy a "nicer" home? Here is 1527 Angus Drive. It's a nice house, but it i'sn't spectacular. Livable though. As of today, you can snap up 1527 Angus Drive for the incredible price of just under 9 million dollars.
Too cheap for you? Maybe you own a business AND won the lottery and you want something even better. 1316 Connaught Drive looks quite nice. Rooms aren't huge. This is no mansion, but it is a true executive home with almost half an acre. A Canadian bargain at only 17.5 million dollars, and your taxes are just over $86,000 a year
You would think everyone must be rich to live in Canada, but most people became rich only due to home ownership. This is a problem. Why even bother starting a business or doing anything when your house equity pays you a million dollars a year? This last house we looked at sold in 2012 for 8.5m. Two years later, it sold for 2.5 million more at 11m, then 4 years later, another 2 million increase to 13m. 6 years later listed at 17.5m. That's 9 million dollars in profit this house has created over just 12 years. The Canadian economy is completely dependent on house prices going up forever.
if you weren't lucky enough to enter the housing market by virtue of your age or from your parents, even if you make 2 million dollars a year and have a million-dollar down payment, you can't afford these houses. Obviously, in a situation where you have more demand than supply, prices go up. The only remaining solution is to rent instead of buying, but a one-bedroom average apartment in the top 5 major cities is now over $2200 a month. Rent prices have been increasing annually at double digits for years now.
So you could leave the city and commute to work. Let's look at some vehicles. How about this Jeep Wagoneer, only $137,000. More of a Pickup truck person? How about a GMC Sierra only $126,000. Its not rare now to see new pickup trucks over $100,000 and I see people driving them! A Jeep Wrangler can be had for only $115,000.
You might think Canada must be paying people well to afford such prices. The reality is that Canadian tech workers, who hold some of the highest-paid positions, earn 46% less than their counterparts in the USA. And we do not have many tech jobs to begin with. Innovation and business starts are super low despite studies showing that even back in 2016, Canada was deteriorating into a country of low-wage part-time jobs.
Today, 7 in 10 Canadians say the country is broken. Violent crime has been rising every year since 2015. What happened in 2015? I can't recall. Crime is so bad the police are telling homeowners just to leave their car keys at the front door so criminals won't wreck your place. Homicide rates are at an all-time high. Many people don't know this, but all recreational pharmaceuticals have been decriminalized in parts of Canada, no matter how hard. You can legally carry up to 2.5 grams of any of the "hard stuff" and the devils lettuce is completely open everywhere and can be bought in stores around the country.
Despite record debt and spending our money like a drunken sailor, our government decided to increase the government workforce by 40%. And it still takes 2 hours to get through to speak with any government office. Canadian citizens now have the highest level of debt out of any G7 countries. Many people are missing payments as their credit card debts, often because of paying for food and needed items, result in delinquencies. Because people couldn't pay their mortgages, banks simply extended the term. Canada, the only home of a 90 year mortgage. They have since clamped down on that, but still, almost 20% of mortgage holders now have 30 years or more mortgages, which was only 2% a year ago.
