Hello and welcome to miniTalks where we bring you byte-sized information about the latest cybersecurity trends. Today we have Mr Kalpesh Hiran with us to speak about how businesses are now moving to the cloud and their challenges.
Let's start with the big picture. Not too long ago, many organizations were quite hesitant about moving to the cloud. Can you talk about how that mindset has changed?
Guest: Absolutely. Initially, there was a lot of fear and uncertainty around cloud adoption. Concerns about security, control, and data privacy were major barriers. However, over time, several factors have contributed to a shift in mindset. Advances in cloud security technologies, improved regulatory frameworks, and the undeniable benefits of scalability and cost-efficiency have reassured organizations. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift as remote work became essential, demonstrating the flexibility and resilience that cloud solutions can provide.
So, as more organizations adopt the cloud, how has the traditional security perimeter changed?
What are the challenges faced, once users have shifted to the cloud?
As more organizations adopt the cloud, ATTACK SURFACE the traditional security perimeter has expanded beyond on-premises infrastructure. Now, it includes cloud environments like AWS, SAAS from 3rd party, AS emp working remotely, remote workspaces, and mobile devices. This means security strategies must adapt to protect data and applications no matter where they are accessed from. This expanded perimeter means that traditional security measures are no longer sufficient, and organizations need to rethink their security strategies.
How do you suggest that businesses secure themselves from these challenges that they're facing?
Guest: There are several key challenges. Firstly, data breaches remain a major concern, often due to misconfigured cloud settings, insider threats or inadequate access controls. Secondly, there's the issue of visibility—many organizations struggle to keep track of their data across multiple cloud services. Compliance is another critical area, as organizations must ensure they meet various regulatory requirements across different jurisdictions.
Let's take Google Workspace as an example, how can you provide additional security to a business than what Google already provides for companies?
Guest: Absolutely. Let's talk about a legal firm that faced significant security challenges when moving to the cloud. They had to ensure the privacy and security of customer sensitive data. They implemented a comprehensive cloud security strategy, including robust encryption, strict access controls, and continuous monitoring. They also used a CASB solution to gain better visibility and control over their data across various cloud services. This approach helped them secure their cloud environment and maintain compliance.
