Piranha Bytes Shuts Down: A Farewell Eulogy
After 25+ years Piranha Bytes has seemingly closed its doors. Known for their work in the action-RPG genre with the Gothic, Risen, and Elex series, their games may not have always been great but they had a unique heart and soul that will be sorely missed. The small German developer had previously managed to stay afloat from publisher to publisher, from Egmont to JoWood to Deep Silver to THQ Nordic, despite never being a major commercial success, but has seemingly gone out of business as the latest victim in Embracer Group's widespread layoffs and budget cuts. Key staff members had already left the company six months ago, and although the remaining team members had hoped to pitch their work to land with a new publisher, such salvation never came and they were forced to terminate business operations at the end of June, 2024. This video summarizes the series of events leading up to their termination and offers my thoughts on the situation as a longtime fan, with a brief tribute to all the folks who ever worked at Piranha Bytes over the years.
