Grinding charcoal in a mortar and pestle is an interesting sensation. It's a slow process, but it's worth the while. Ground charcoal is a substance we all have access to. It has had many uses in our history. It was used in projectile warfare. The Greeks used it in medicine. Some of our oldest cave drawings were made with a pigment that relied on it.

Today, I grind it to make a temper to heat treat my blades. I think that's pretty cool.
