An API, or application programming interface, enables communication between applications or software. They’re what make a request for an app or webpage -- like typing in a URL or clicking a link -- bring you where you wanted to go.

If you’ve ever visited a webpage from a browser, or shared data between two sites (think, sharing a link from Twitter to Facebook), you’ve interacted with an API. APIs can be private, partner, or public, and provide broadly useful features.
