SharePoint is a versatile platform developed by Microsoft that serves as a robust tool for facilitating collaboration, document management, and content sharing within organizations. It finds extensive use in creating intranets, extranets, team sites, and much more. Over the years, Microsoft has introduced several versions of SharePoint, each with its unique set of features and capabilities.
SharePoint 2001 (SharePoint Team Services):
Our journey through the various SharePoint versions begins with SharePoint 2001, also known as SharePoint Team Services. This was the very first iteration of SharePoint and marked Microsoft's entry into the world of collaborative software. It was primarily focused on document management and team collaboration. Identifying SharePoint 2001 is relatively straightforward, as it is a legacy version rarely encountered today. If you stumble upon a SharePoint environment that feels ancient, it might be SharePoint 2001.
SharePoint 2003:
Next up is SharePoint 2003. This version brought significant improvements over its predecessor, with enhanced document management, search capabilities, and the introduction of web parts for customization. Identifying SharePoint 2003 can be done by checking for its characteristic user interface and dated features. However, it's quite rare to find SharePoint 2003 installations still in use today, as most organizations have upgraded to more recent versions.
SharePoint 2007:
Moving forward, SharePoint 2007, also known as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007), marked a substantial shift in SharePoint's capabilities. This version introduced enterprise-level features like business intelligence, advanced search, and workflows. To recognize SharePoint 2007, look for its classic interface, which significantly differs from later versions, and the absence of more modern features.
SharePoint 2010:
SharePoint 2010 was a pivotal release, introducing features that continue to be relevant today. It enhanced social collaboration, introduced the ribbon interface, and improved scalability. To identify SharePoint 2010, you can look for its distinctive ribbon interface and the presence of features like My Sites and social tagging.
SharePoint 2013:
SharePoint 2013 brought forth significant improvements in social collaboration, mobile responsiveness, and search capabilities. The interface remained similar to SharePoint 2010, but you can spot SharePoint 2013 by its improved mobile view and features like SkyDrive Pro.
SharePoint 2016:
SharePoint 2016 is a version designed to bridge the gap between on-premises and cloud-based solutions. It introduced hybrid capabilities, allowing organizations to integrate SharePoint with Office 365. Recognizing SharePoint 2016 involves looking for its hybrid features and the ability to connect with SharePoint Online.
SharePoint 2019:
SharePoint 2019 is the latest on-premises version of SharePoint released by Microsoft. It continued to focus on hybrid scenarios, improved user experiences, and enhanced security. To spot SharePoint 2019, check for its modern interface elements and the inclusion of features like communication sites.
SharePoint Online (Microsoft 365):
SharePoint Online is Microsoft's cloud-based offering within the Microsoft 365 suite. It receives continuous updates and improvements, making it a dynamic and ever-evolving platform. To know if you're using SharePoint Online, you'll be working within a web-based interface accessible via a web browser.
For On-Premises Versions:
Check the SharePoint Central Administration: Access the Central Administration site and navigate to the "System Settings" section. Here, you can find information about your SharePoint version under the "Farm Version" or "Build Version."
Check the SharePoint Designer: If you have SharePoint Designer installed, open it and click on "Help" in the top menu. You'll find version information in the "About Microsoft SharePoint Designer" dialog box.
Look at Site Settings: Navigate to the site settings of your SharePoint site and check for version information in the "Site Collection Administration" section.
For SharePoint Online:
Admin Center: If you're an administrator, log in to the Microsoft 365 admin center. In the "Admin Centers" section, select "SharePoint." On the SharePoint admin center page, you can find version information under "Settings."
Modern SharePoint Interface: If you're using SharePoint Online, the modern interface is a clear indicator. It offers a sleek and responsive design with updated features.
