Using the computer keyboard with Ableton to play midi is one the most underutilized tools.

Push the M key to access the computer MIDI keyboard as a controller. But remember when the computer MIDI keyboard is turned on, you can’t do a lot of keyboard shortcuts.

You can use the X and Z key to move up and down the octaves. The A through L keys (the computer keyboards middle row) are the white keys on a piano keyboard. The black sharp keys are above them. The C and V key adjust note velocities. Once you get used to playing it it comes in real handy. ‬

I’ve known about it for a long time now, but it wasn’t until I saw San Holo using it extensively, that I started using it more.

Sometimes you don’t wanna reach for a keyboard, or you’re at a coffee shop, or your families house and you just want to write music.

It’s great for melody writing because it keeps you constrained to around an octave. This can help you focus on melody.

I hope you find time to play with the computer keyboard as a MIDI controller in Ableton. Have a good day.
