Born in India's Eastern state of Orissa, this classical dance form can be traced back to the 1st century B.C. Characterizes by its distinct grace and charm, this soft, lyrical dance is most noted for the concept of Tribhangi that divides the body into the head, bust and torso. For the same reason, Odissi expounds certain unique poses, very distinct from other classical dances. An Odissi dancer is seen as a harmonious synthesis of dexterous precision and grace, often chiselled to perfection.
Sujta Mohapatra, the celebrated disciple of the legendary Kelucharan Mohapatra, introduces you to the immortal charm of Odissi. Her passion and verve for this dance form has transcended the stage into activism, as evident from her association with 'Srjan', a premier intitute for Odissi in India.
