In today's video, I'll show you how to use the SCAN Function in Excel to apply running total and how to show the highest sales so far in the year at each point in time.

Add the first argument for the SCAN function, the initial value. Bracket open, then add zero because the running total begins with zero. The second argument is the array, select the range that contains values. Use SUM as a third argument, bracket close, then press enter.

The Running Total column calculates the cumulative sales up to each month using the formula, which means it progressively sums the sales figures from the Sales column.

I'm using the Max column to calculate the maximum sales value up to each month. Type SCAN. The first and the second arguments are the same as the previous example. Use the MAX function as a third argument.
The Max column shows the highest sales figure recorded so far in the year at each point in time. It gives a cumulative perspective on the peak sales, month-to-month. For instance, by September, the highest monthly sales reached was 4031, and this remained the highest value through to December.
