The wholesale discount via IngramSpark can trip up a lot of author. Here's how it works:
The discount is for the retailer. Remember, IngramSpark just distributes the book to big retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, etc.
This question asks about hardcovers, but for easy math let's say the book retail price is $10.00
If the wholesale discount is 55% and a customer goes to Amazon to buy if, the customer still pays $10.00. The retailer, for example, Amazon, would only pay the author $4.50 for the book. They keep the $5.50.
The $4.50 that Amazon paid for the book is sent back to IngramSpark to cover the distribution fee and print cost. What's left over after that goes to the Author.
That's why you'll see hardcovers are priced so high. They are expensive to produce.
I hope this helps!
