Before you go to Petsmart, Petco or any big box store that sells tropical fish and fish keeping supplies, watch this video before you go! Here are my 5 tips to ensure that you have the best possible experience when buying from one of the big box chain stores like PetSmart.
I know, some of you wouldn't buy a fish from a PetSmart or a PetCo. I get it. Some of you have had bad experiences. I get that too. Today I was surprised to hear about some of the changes being made by my local PetSmart, including the quarantining of new fish arrivals and a hospital tank for sick fish (instead of letting the fish become progressively more and more sick in the display tank and eventually laying their dead and on display for everyone to see).
I have, a few times in the past, purchased fish from PetSmart. It actually turned out okay. Now, years later, I know what questions to ask and these questions will help you to determine if this particular store is safe to buy from. Every Petco or Petsmart is not the same. Which are safe and which are not? Here are my top 5 tips for you to keep in mind when visiting a PetSmart or PetCo fish department that can help to ensure that your fish purchase turns out okay.
Do you have a big box fish store like PetSmart near you? Do you go there and buy supplies and fish? What's been your experience shopping there? Share your thoughts in the comment section below. I look forward to reading your comments since as you know, I'm always learning from you.
Some of you have asked for ways to support the channel. Well I now have an Amazon store front. If you would like to see some of the fish keeping products that I use and recommend, visit my Amazon store. If you buy something during that trip to Amazon, even if it's not from my store, the channel gets a (very small) percentage. It doesn't increase your cost by one cent and helps the channel. Pretty cool, right?! Here is the link to my Amazon Store Front:

Did you know that there's a friendly and helpful fish keeping group on Facebook called: "Ben O'Cichlid"? Sure, "Cichlid" is in the name but all fish keepers are welcome! If you're on FB, check it out. If you would like to join please be sure to answer all the join-in questions so that the admins approve your request (it's how we keep keep it a "troll-free" zone!).
Don't forget to stop by on Saturday@10am for the Cichlids & Coffee live stream. Tell your friends and let's get into some fun discussions about taking care of our finned friends.
Why not watch the live stream while drinking out of a Ben O'Cichlid coffee mug or wearing a channel hoodie or tee. Purchases of channel merchandise help to support the channel. I have a Teespring store front here: teespring.com/stores/ben-ocharts-store
and don't forget to use the code "LIVESTREAM" for a 10% discount at check-out.
Help support the future of the hobby by visiting your local fish store and joining groups that defend the hobby, like the American Cichlid Association. I'm a member of the ACA. You can visit them here: cichlid.org
Shout-outs to Christopher Martin for the Cichlids & Coffee logo, to Sam Penny for the Youtube channel banner art and to Phil Griffiths for the dropping fish video, for putting Sam's artwork in the surf and for the channel icon!
