Yes google has a way more sophisticated algorithm than we will ever know, but it really boils down to one thing.

MISERABLE FAILURE
Do you guys remember a story, the miserable failure story? Also known as the google bombing story. It was around 2005-2006, and the entire SEO community got together to put a link EVERYWHERE that pointed to the White House profile page of George Bush with the link title “miserable failure”
So if anyone googled miserable failure, bush was the #1 result.
Links are still the most important factor of ranking, it just matters where your links come from.
WEBSITE CONTENT
So here’s the thing, yes you need this, and yes this is the most damn obvious, but the reality is. You will not show up for crap anywhere if this is all you have. It’s so annoying that everyone talks about only this, because this will get you no where.
Yes you need title tags, meta tags, meta description, h1, h2, keywords in the body content, sitemaps, alt tags in images, all those little tricks you can do to your website, BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Yes you need this before you move onto the next part though, the next part is what actually makes you show up.
