In the far-off lands of the middle Kingdom (and in some places in Nepal, Burma and India) lives a famous master of kung fu. He is constantly hiding from other people's eyes, traveling around the world in search of the only worthy opponent to fight and test his skills.
Gentlemen, today our eye, and especially mine, because it is one of my favorite tummies, will delight master Shifu, aka the little Panda, aka the cat bear or the red Panda (Ailurus fulgens).
The first written mention of this quintessential Milota in China dates back to the XIII century, but Europeans only learned about the red Panda in the XIX century. The cat bear was officially "discovered" in 1821 by the English naturalist Thomas Hardwick.
However, the French naturalist beat him to the title. He argued that the epithet "brilliant, bright" is much better suited to such a beautiful animal than the incomprehensible Chinese name. The Frenchman described the new animal as "a beautiful creature, one of the cutest quadrupeds on the planet." And for once, I absolutely agree with the French.
