Four-time NBA champion LeBron James is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times. This move would make James an unrestricted free agent, although most NBA insiders believe he intends to remain with the Lakers.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst suggested in May that if James opts out, it would likely be to restructure his contract, potentially adding a no-trade clause. NBA rules do not allow no-trade clauses to be added to existing contracts through extensions, and only ten players in league history have secured such a clause.

James is projected to sign a new three-year, $162 million deal, the maximum allowed under the NBA's over-38 rule. While opting out would cost him around $2.3 million, James might find the financial sacrifice worthwhile to obtain a no-trade clause.

The Lakers are reportedly willing to accommodate any contract structure James desires in a new deal. However, if James explores other options, the Philadelphia 76ers have been mentioned as a potential destination, given their likely salary cap space to accommodate him.
