Staying faithful to Lawrence's semi-autobiographical tale of life and love in a close-knit mining town in Northern England, Sons and Lovers includes great performances by Trevor Howard as gruff miner Walter, Wendy Hiller as his wife, Gertrude, and Dean Stockwell as their son Paul Morel, a sensitive, aspiring artist smothered by his mother, resenting his father, and unable to attain love with either the young devoted Miriam or the experienced Mrs. Dawes, a suffragette separated from her husband. Cardiff won a Golden Globe and a New York Film Critics award for his direction in addition to receiving an Oscar nomination for a film that remains the definitive adaptation of Lawrence's classic novel.
