macOS 11 Big Sur brings many new features to the Mac, but do those features come at a cost to performance when compared to macOS Catalina? In this video, I will conduct a boot-speed test, program opening speed test, GeekBench 5 test, Final Cut Pro X export test, and a battery life test across both operating systems in order to truly find out whether either version is faster or slower than the other.
macOS Catalina version: 10.15.6
macOS Big Sur version: 11.0 Public Beta (20A5343j)
As a note, these tests are more applicable to older/slower Macs (i.e. lower-end Macs from around 2013-2015 that would have shipped with OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Mavericks, OS X Yosemite, or even OS X El Capitan) as I am running all tests in this video on a 2015 12” MacBook, a computer that isn't exactly known for its performance. With a newer/faster Mac, any potential performance differences will most likely be less noticeable.
So, should you upgrade to Big Sur on your Intel Mac in 2020? Watch this video to find out!
Computer: 2015 12" Retina MacBook (Space Gray), Intel Core M 5Y31 CPU, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 5300
