When a bullet penetrates the body, it crushes and rips the tissue in its path, leaving a permanent cavity. The impact energy is dispersed in a shock wave that spirally flings surrounding tissue away from the path of the projectile, creating a cavity greater than the diameter of the bullet, which is known as the temporary stress cavity. Before a permanent wound track forms, the temporary stress cavity lasts for around 5 to 10 milliseconds with a succession of progressively smaller pulsations and contractions.
