HISTORIC HOME TOUR: MOUNT REPOSE PLANTATION BUILT 1824 LOOK AT THESE SPECTACULAR ORIGINAL INTERIORS
What a spectacular example of early American architecture! Mount Repose is built on land granted to John Bisland by the Spanish crown in 1782. It is the second oldest home built by the Bisland family in the Pine Ridge area just outside of Natchez, Mississippi.
William Bisland, for whom the home was constructed was born in 1797 and died in 1847. He was the son of John Bisland, a Scottish immigrant who settled in the area in 1776. Like his father, William was a planter, and the home was built on land bequeathed to him by his father on his death in 1821. Although the Bisland family were among the earliest and wealthiest familis in Adams County they chose not to have any active interest in the political or social life in nearby Natchez. Instead, William and his family were founding members of their local Presbyterian church. William Bisland was an elder in the church and his tomb on the churchyard there was meant to serve as a "remembrance of his virtues and dispenser of the light of his example over the church and vicarage in which his life he loved so well."
The Bisland family owned and lived in the home well in to the 20th century. One of its more famous and revolutionary inhabitants was Elizabeth Bisland, the "Cosmopolitan" magazine correspondent who raced Nellie Bly around the world in 1889-1890.
