In this video, we demonstrate a quick test that allows you to compare the rates at which gypsum products dissolve in water, and we also provide some rough guidelines to help distinguish gypsum-based (calcium sulfate dihydrate) calcium amendment products from those that are based on other materials such as mined calcium sulfate anhydrite.
The materials that you will need for this quick test are:
1) a 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon (1.25 ml)
2) A 2-cup (500 ml) measuring cup with milliliter markings on the side of the cup
3)A Scout Soil Electrical Conductivity Probe
4) A timer
5)A notebook and pen for recording your observations
6)15 minutes of your time for each product tested
If the product is gypsum, the EC of the solution should increase by about 0.8 dS/m
