This report tells the story of Kimberly Bergalis, who surprised the nation in September 1990 by revealing she was "patient A," the first known case in the U.S. of someone getting AIDS from a medical procedure. At first, doctors did not believe the dentist could be the source of the infection. However, in January, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that her specific strain of HIV was almost a perfect match to that of the dentist, Acer. The CDC confirmed that Acer had infected her and three other patients while treating them in his dental office in Stuart. It remains unclear how the virus spread from him to at least five patients. Acer, who identified as bisexual, did not cooperate with federal and state AIDS investigators before he passed away on September 3, 1990. The latter part of this report discusses other healthcare workers with HIV who are suspected of transmitting the virus to patients and explores possible solutions to keep the public at ease and stop the further spread of the virus in a hospital setting.
