Macao is located in a small coastal region in the south of China. A land where buildings, casinos and luxury abound. Here trade, investment and consumption abound, driven largely by tourism and an unrivaled gambling industry. In fact, Macau is considered the Las Vegas of Asia. The curious thing is that, despite this economic dynamism and a lifestyle similar to that of any tourist city in the Western world, Macau is part of China, a nation with a state that regulates much of the economic activity, civil liberties and where democracy does not exist. China controls freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of political organization. So Macau presents itself as a mystery because while China restricts markets and freedoms, Macau is more aligned with the free market, freedom of the press is greater and the judicial system based on Portuguese law is more independent and offers greater impartiality compared to mainland China's judicial system. So the questions are: how can this small territory function with such a different logic than China? And can Macau remain as capitalist or will it end up being intervened like Hong Kong?
