Performed by the Junge Bläserphilharmonie Nordrhein Westfalen conducted by Harry Vorselen, during the World Music Contest 2013 in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. Introduction:

This composition is the result of a request of the Landesmusikrat (State Music Council) of the German federal state Nordrhein Westfalen and of the Verein zur Förderung von Landesjugendensembles NRW (the Foundation to support the youth ensembles of Nordrhein-Westfalen, to write a composition for the Junge Bläserphilharmonie (Young Philharmonic Wind Band) NRW. I was asked to compose a relatively short piece, possibly with some jazz elements.

I turned to G.K. Chesterton's amusing poem All through the Night. More than twenty years ago, I set it to music, but the little song had never left my drawer. I used it as a starting point, combining it with the following musical program:

Adagio. Night. Everything is dark and quiet.

Allegro. No, not everything. In the distance, something is going on. It's getting closer.
It turns out to be a jazz party:
Jazz is jerking, jazzers reeling,
Raucous saxophones are pealing.
Din like all damnation dealing—
Yelling, banging, howling, squealing,
Fill the Room from floor to ceiling,
All through the night.

Poco a poco calmando. After a while, the music reaches a climax and then gradually dies down.

Tranquillo. Some of the jazzy music is repeated in a nocturnal, tranquil atmosphere.

Adagio. The composition ends as it began.
