It doesn’t always have to be easy…

The pointing machine, if I remember correctly, was invented in Italy, and is about 200+ years old.

it’s job is to allow you to transfer points in space from one model to another.

now, if you’re looking at this video and thinking… Ryan, that looks like it takes lot of time… Then, I would say, you’re right! it takes an insanely long period of time.

But that’s why I do it.

In this day and age of fast food, fast Amazon deliveries, instant millionaires, chat GTP that writes your essays for you, instant answers from Google… Well, I think you get the picture. Slow is the new fast.

Today this has mostly been replaced by CNC and robots. But I’m a firm believer in learning craft and tradition, even if I go about it in my own way. After all, I’m not starting by learning how to carve lettering.

The hardest part of this process is creating a shared reference between the 3-D printed model and the marble block. I didn’t do this the traditional way, where something is attached to the top of the 3-D printed model as well as the marble.

Instead, I used dowels drilled into the base of the 3-D printed model, and the sculpting stand for the marble block.

those dowels correspond to holes drilled in the Crosswood. That’s the wooden t shape. Those holes in the crossword are what create the shared reference between the 3-D printed model, and the marble block.

now, hopefully somebody doesn’t bump one of these out of place… That would suck.
