In the south-eastern part of the #Peloponnese lies Sparta, a #prominent city-state in ancient Greece. Built on the banks of the #Eurotas river in #Laconia region, the city-state was known as #Lacedaemon. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the #dominant military land-power in ancient Greece, recognized as the leading force during the Greco-Persian #Wars. Sparta was the principal #enemy of #Athens during the Peloponnesian War, from which it emerged victorious. It was sacked and destroyed in 396 AD by the #Visigoths. In the Middle Ages, the local population moved to Mystras.
Modern Sparta was re-founded in 1834, by King #Otto of Greece. Today, it has a population of 33.000 residents and is a local financial and #agricultural center.
