Do you need a master's degree in data science? I understand why people feel like it might be required for getting into data science and analytics. But is it? And is it right for you? In other words, Is a master's of data science worth it?
WHY DS/ANALYTICS?
First things first, why do you want to get into data science/analytics? Do you actually want to get into data science/analytics? If you’ve considered this already and your heart is set on it, then great, let’s move on! But before we get too far, let’s talk about your expectations, bringing us to number two on our list:
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU NEED A MASTER'S DEGREE?
What is it that you think a master’s will do for you? There’s a number of positives that can come with a master’s degree that I’ve talked about extensively on this channel. But you can definitely break into the field without one. So think about what you're expecting for a master's degree to do for you, and try to think about ways to accomplish that without one.
DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE?
I don’t mean the summer you spent working at a movie theater, I mean have you worked as an analyst in some capacity? If you’re looking to follow my path and use a master’s as a shortcut into analytics at a higher pay rate (again see my video on how I did this), then you’re probably going to need some experience to have any luck. When I first started as a financial analyst there were a couple of other people in my office with master’s degrees with the exact same job title, and pay rate, as me because they didn’t have any work experience.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN (WHAT FIELD)?
If your degree is in a non-technical field and your work experience is in a non-technical field as well, I can see the urge to get a master’s degree to show employers you have the hard skills they want, but what I’d suggest in this situation is to work on your coding and statistics knowledge on your own and do a couple of Kaggle projects to 1. Make sure you enjoy the coding and statistics, and 2. Add some projects to your resume that show your interest and aptitude.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO WORK?
Finally, Where (what area and what company) do you want to work? Is there a school with a data science program near there that has a good reputation? I have found that companies have certain schools that they are particularly fond of recruiting from. For me going to the University of Virginia was a great option because I wanted to work in Richmond, VA and most of the companies there recruit from UVA. Try to find some schools with a capstone project course that they work with local companies on. Try to find somewhere like that near you, a school with a good reputation and a good program will go a lot farther.
