When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. media had already been in the midst of speculative frenzy about what both countries would do. There were the widespread and widely shared reactions of disbelief that war was happening in Europe, of sympathy for the refugees and of anger at Putin. But there was also something else: a rotating cast of “experts” who weighed in on the situation and all agreed that Ukraine’s only recourse, with the U.S.‘ support, should and must be to beat Russia back. A year of bloody, deadly war later and that narrative still plays in our headlines, on our cable panels and over the airwaves from pundits titled “analyst,” “expert” or “contributor.” But one question that has seldom been asked is: Who are these “experts” and how does continuing the war serve them?
