I'm sure you've seen this painting before, but in a different context. Social media has given this painting a lot of popularity in recent years; however, few people know its true story.
An illustrator and war correspondent named Thomas Lea created a series of paintings for LIFE magazine during World War II. This painting, called "The 2,000 Yard Stare," became the most famous of the series, depicting the shock and trauma of a soldier who has witnessed the atrocities of combat.
