Although it is commonly believed that pregnancy lasts nine months, it actually takes up to 40 weeks or 280 days, which are divided into three trimesters. The due date is calculated beginning from the first day of the last menstrual cycle. Retrospectively, you are considered pregnant before conception actually takes place.

When you are planning for a child, think about changes you need to make in your lifestyle and diet. You should already be taking folic acid, also known as Vitamin B9. Folic acid is vitally important for the growth and development of the fetus in the first trimester and helps prevent birth defects. When you care about your baby, you will not consume anything harmful, e.g narcotics, alcohol or tobacco. Second-hand smoking should also be avoided. When planning a pregnancy, you should visit a gynaecologist and also your dentist. Iron intake is key to the healthy development of the embryo. If you are on any medication, seek advice from your doctor, midwife or pharmacist as some medicines are either unsuitable or banned during pregnancy.
