A few isolated dc-dc converters were shorted and burnt while students were using them in the lab. I used the opportunity and took them home to open them and find out internal circuitry. A self-oscillating circuitry with two transistors are used in the primary side, a toroidal transformer with a ferrite core covered with a plastic layer, and the secondary side rectifiers, are what is inside these isolated DC-DC converters.
The burnt converters cost a few Euro each, but to me what I have learned from the circuitry and the construction of the transformer worth hundreds of Euros.
