Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition involving persistent challenges with social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviour.

While autism is considered a lifelong disorder, the degree of impairment in functioning because of these challenges varies between individuals with autism.
Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work, for example. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first year.
The DSM-5 divides symptoms of ASD into two categories:
Problems with communication and social interaction
Restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour or activities
To be diagnosed with autism, a person must experience symptoms in both of these categories.
