About this video: Today, we’re going to showcase the best settings for Optifine for Minecraft 1.20.1. Throughout this video, we’re going to dive into each setting to setup Minecraft to be able to run with high FPS without lag. This video’s purpose is to show you the perfect balance of performance settings and graphics settings with Optifine for Minecraft Java Edition.

Optifine is one of the most popular mods for Minecraft Java Edition, and because of all of the performance modifications it adds to the game, it’s easy to see why. Optifine will allow you to control your game on a much deeper level than any of the vanilla settings. For example, Optifine allows you to control the particle effects that come from lava, torches, water, and more. This deep level of control means that even low-end PCs can run Minecraft with smooth FPS and without lag.

To start off this video, we’re going to dive into our launcher settings before we even get into Optifine settings. For that, we’ll be adding more allocated RAM to our Minecraft game. To start off, we’ll open Minecraft and hit ‘Installations’ in the tab bar at the top. From here, we’ll hover over the Optifine installation and hit the three dots to the right. After that, we’ll hit ‘Edit’ and scroll down to the bottom of that page to JVM Arguments. From here, we’ll change the 2 to a 4, meaning we are allowing Minecraft Java Edition to use more RAM - up to 4gb in this case. This doubles the RAM that Minecraft can utilize for playing.

After that, we’ll launch Minecraft and head directly to the Options page. Just a note, though. You will have the best performance in Minecraft when you aren’t using a Resource Page. Using the default textures in Minecraft will give you the best performance, so if you’re struggling with lag, turning off your resource pack is a great place to start.

After any resource packs are disabled, we’ll head into the Options and Video Settings. In the Video Settings tab, set graphics to fast and the render distance to 12. Also turn simulation distance in Optifine down to 5 before turning off entity shadows.

At this point, it’s also important to point out that shaders will significantly lower your FPS, even with a decent PC and Optifine settings. If you’re struggling to maintain over 40-50 FPS in Minecraft with shaders, try either tweaking your shaders settings or turning off shaders in Optifine.

In the Quality tab for settings in Optifine, make sure to turn off mipmap levels as well as emissive textures. At this point, it’s also a good idea to disable random entities, better snow, custom fonts, colors, items, and sky. We also recommend turning Optifine grass to ‘fast’ instead of better.

Moving on from there with the best Optifine settings for Minecraft 1.20.1, we’ll set clouds to fast. We’ll also set vignette and rain/snow to fast. I would recommend disabling clouds completely in Minecraft, as you’re never looking up at the sky in Minecraft unless it’s for a screenshot. Now is a great time to disable biome blend.

Heading into the Detail settings for Optifine 1.20.1, we can change the biggest options for the best performance and increased FPS with Optifine for Minecraft 1.20.1. Here, turn on render regions and fast render. We’ll also turn on smart animations, fast math, smooth fps, smooth world, dynamic updates, and lazy chunk loading. To top it all off, for the best Optifine settings for Java Edition, set chunk updates to 1 and Minecraft Optifine chunk builder to semi-blocking.

Next up, we’ll head on to the animations tab for Optifine. From here, if you’re looking for the best performance, set everything to All Off. If you want the best possible visuals, turn it to All On. However, keep in mind, this will negatively impact your game performance and lower your Minecraft FPS, even on strong computers.

The rest of the Optifine settings are completely up to you. This guide should have your computer running Minecraft 1.20.1 smoothly without lag.
