A measure of spread is a single number that describes the spread of a data set. One measure of spread is the interquartile range (IQR). The IQR is the difference between the upper quartile and lower quartile. Quartiles are three values that divide a data set into fourths. The lower quartile is the median of the lower half of the data, the median is the middle number, the upper quartile is the median of the upper half of the data. We need the lower and upper quartile data to find the IQR, interquartile range, because the IQR is the difference between the lower and upper quartiles. We show walk-throughs of finding the IQR for a data sets given in box plots.
