The apropos command assists the user when they don't remember the exact command but know a few keywords related to the command that define its uses or functionality. It searches the Linux man page using the keyword provided by the user to find the command and its functions
The apropos command is used as follows
apropos keyword
To search for all man pages that contain the keyword "copy" in their short description, type:
apropos copy
Where copy is the keyword or phrase you want to search for. The command will search through the short descriptions of all man pages installed on the system and return any pages that contain the keyword.
You can also use the -w option to search for the keyword in the whole man page not only in the description.
apropos -w keyword
For example, to search for all man pages that contain the keyword "copy" in their short description and whole man page:
apropos -w copy
You can also use the -s section option to search within a specific section of the man pages, like 1 for user commands, or 8 for system administration commands.
You can also combine options like this
apropos -w -s sectionkeyword
It will search for keyword in whole man page and within a specific section of the man pages.
For example, to search for all man pages that contain the keyword "mount" in their short description and whole man page within section 8 (system administration commands)
apropos -w -s 8 mount
