The Etruscans produced stunning art, built monumental tombs and created elaborate artefacts. Their culture was sophisticated and, in later years, heavily influenced by the Greek colonies on the Italian Peninsula. However, in spite of the huge amount of material culture the Etruscans left behind, experts have struggled to determine a geographic origin for them.

Some ancient writers saw them as native, others as migrating from Anatolia and there was at least one source that put their ancestors in the Aegean. Figuring out their origin is made more difficult by the Etruscan language which still hasn't been deciphered in its entirety but is thought to have been non-Indo-European.

Last year an ancient DNA study carried out on Etruscan individuals and other skeletal remains from the Italian Peninsula made some interesting finds and may finally have solved the mystery. Join me as I discuss evidence for the geographic origin of the Etruscans that's been found so far!
