How to setup lcd display with Arduino

Before we get into the code, make sure you have wired your LCD to the Arduino correctly. Here's a common wiring setup:
LCD RS pin to digital pin 7
LCD E pin to digital pin 8
LCD D4 pin to digital pin 9
LCD D5 pin to digital pin 10
LCD D6 pin to digital pin 11
LCD D7 pin to digital pin 12
LCD VSS pin to GND
LCD VDD pin to 5V
LCD RW pin to GND
LCD V0 pin to the middle pin of a 10k potentiometer (other two pins to 5V and GND)
LCD A pin to 5V (via a current-limiting resistor, e.g., 220 ohms)
LCD K pin to GND
