Post types are the different types of content in a WordPress site and can be though of as a content type.
By default WordPress has five post, pages, attachemtns, navagation menus, and revisions.
The help distingusih differnt content types.
WordPress also has two taxonomies categories and tags.
So when should you create one of these?
If you want to add more features such as ratings, generes, or director to make it more searchable you would want to create your own.
Or if you want to showcase your work as an artist you can make a portfolio custom post type.
There are plugins that create custom post types for your site such as Soliloquy for sliders or plugins for ecommerce.
