The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world only a few decades ago. However, a government decision changed everything. The courses of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers were modified to favor the cotton industry.
The plan was relatively successful, but the problem was that the Aral Sea began to dry up. In this way, it was reduced to 10% of the extension it had. The UN called it one of the biggest environmental disasters caused by human action.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the resulting countries have responsibilities and interests over what remained of the Aral Sea. Why do Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan have to negotiate.
In 2005, Kazakhstan built a dam that improved conditions in the northern part of the Aral, but complicated the southern part. How is the Aral Sea today, the great environmental disaster of our time?
