U.S. successfully launches Commander Alan B. Shepard in a sub-orbital flight and Captain Grissom in another sub-orbital flight in which his space capsule, Liberty 7, is lost at sea.
Germany - East Germany Begins Building The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall becomes the line of demarcation between East Berlin and West Berlin as the Communists throw up their Wall of Hate. Hastily barricades of brick and barbed wire are thrown up by East Germany as German civilians continue to run across 'No Man's Land' to West Germany.
