As I have had major problems with root tips burns lately, I decided to stop using my old fertilizer and start with the most decent one I could find in stores, until I figure out what fertilizer is better. However, this one has some seaweed extract in it..

So I set on a quest to find a temporary replacement and found a fertilizer from Compo, NPK ratio 3-4-5 (what can you do), NO3 as main nitrogen source and no urea, at least that's what the label says. It also has a bunch of micro elements, fairly unusual for commercial fertilizers, that's why I purchased it.
However it has one more thing.. seaweed extract, or kelp. Now in my inorganic set up I try to stay away from organics, however I find I have no choice for the moment. Also I am slightly curious what the hype is about seaweed, so here we are trying it out.
I am dosing a quarter of the recommended dosage as I want to keep the tds meter at or under 200 ppm and plan to fertilize at each watering. I might need to flush now that I use this, since organic build up is not a joy either.
Now about kelp, it appears it contains a lot of plant hormones, vitamins and micronutrients, but also calcium and magnesium. On paper (and forums) people love the stuff, but will this live up to the expectations? I am incline to think it won;t, but this time I so so wish I am wrong. We shall see in one month or so.
Beware of keeping the prepared solution in a bottle for a few days, it will smell like a carcass.. you have been warned. Now let's see if my orchid pots will smell like that too :(
