SOLIDWORKS Tools to Create Dynamic Cross-Section Profile Sketches
The functionality to instantly create dynamic cross-section profile sketches directly from solid models is a powerful tool. For reverse engineering complex imported parts, SOLIDWORKS' Slicing tool & Intersection Curve feature generate directly linked sketches that will produce all the critical dimensions required for recreating & redesigning. If any specs require modification, these referenced sketches will automatically update along with the model. The Section View display feature can show the desired cross-section profile; however, it does not have the ability to convert entities or populate a derived sketch. Much more practically, the Slicing tool has the capability to instantly create multiple cross-section profile sketches at specified linear or rotational offset intervals within an adjustable bounding box. Alternatively, the Intersection Curve feature is much more straight forward & can be used while editing a sketch.
