Everyone who uses the Apple HomeKit be it on the iPhone, iPad, or MacOS like the Mac Mini M1 has faced the same dilemma:

Most smart devices are not compatible with Apple HomeKit. Even when you find devices that are compatible, they nearly always carry with them the same two conditions:

1. They are not affordable compared to the Amazon and Google devices.
2. They are not as readily available. Often times, you have to order them online and wait for them to arrive. For the HomeKit competitors, you usually can pick up compatible devices at Home Depot, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc.

Well, that does not have to be the case. Using an internet community created & maintained service called Homebridge, you can extend the range of devices Apple HomeKit recognizes. The best part of this is: Homebridge is free. The following link takes you to the Github page for Homebridge where you can install the software:

My tutorial is a step-by-step guide for installing Homebridge on a MacOS device. While any Apple silicon MacOS computer can run Homebridge, this is best suited to the Mac Mini M1. Why? Because more than likely, your Mac Mini M1 is always home and always powered on. This is the ideal condition to have for a service that will need to be available 24x7 for the non-Homekit devices you wish to control.

This guide is limited to just getting Homebridge installed on your Mac Mini M1 and adding it to your HomeKit. See my other videos showing how to add the plugin for the Carrier central heating & air controller, and an Ecosmart Color smartbulb from Home Depot's new product line: Hubspace.

As always, please like & subscribe to view more such content on getting the most out of your Mac Mini M1.

NOTE: It is recommended to reboot your Mac Mini M1 after installing Homebridge as the services does not seem to start up correctly until the system has been refreshed.
