"The Dummy" is a 1982 student film by Louis La Volpe. It had the longest cable TV run of any short film and was recognized by the Edinburgh International Film Festival as an influential horror film from the 1980s. Shortly after being made, “The Dummy” was picked up by HBO, USA Network, and Showtime in the early days of cable television, often used as a bumper between horror movies and suspense anthologies like "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." The film received extensive play for ten years and inspired the “killer doll” genre, including the later ”Child's Play" (Chucky) and Annabelle movies. In 2013, "The Dummy" was picked up for three more years of cable play by Comcast's Fearnet. In 2018, the film was invited to the Edinburgh International Film Festival retrospective of influential horror movies of the early 1980s, considered a golden age for U.S. horror. Representing its horror sub-genre, "The Dummy" was the only short film in the series. The film is often cited for its unusual synth score by Louis LaVolpe.

"The Dummy" was the source of nightmares for a generation of kids watching late night television in the 1980s. If you are one of them, please share it with us! Although 35 years old and extremely "low-tech" in this day of CGI effects, it is still fun to watch. The film is shown here in its entirety, with permission.
