From astrophysics to material science to biology, multidisciplinary scientists from across the globe travel to this tower to experiment with near zero gravity.

The Bremen Drop Tower was developed and built 30 years ago, and the 140-meter-high tower contains a 120-meter-high vacuum chamber used to drop experiments under conditions of nearly perfect weightlessness. Experiments performed at the Bremen Drop Tower range from fundamental physics to more applied sciences.

We spoke with Dr. Andreas Gierse, Manager of Innovation Projects at ZARM, Philip Born, PhD, a materials physicist at the German Aerospace Center, and Lisa Dossow, a researcher and PhD Student at the German Aerospace Center to take a deep dive into the Bremen Drop Tower and all it has to offer.

Find out more about how providing a more efficient portal to microgravity will create new opportunities for ambitious testing and how the Bremen Drop Tower will impact the future of scientific discovery in this Focal Point.

What Is Microgravity?
https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstud...
“Microgravity is the condition in which people or objects appear to be weightless. The effects of microgravity can be seen when astronauts and objects float in space. Microgravity can be experienced in other ways, as well.”

How does the drop tower work?
https://www.zarm.uni-bremen.de/en/dro...
“Due to the vacuum, the air drag is so low that the Bremen Drop Tower can provide one of the best quality of microgravity - in some aspects even better than on the International Space Station.”

Falling upwards: how to create microgravity
https://www.esa.int/Science_Explorati...
“From the moment the booster burns out, the rocket and everything inside it are weightless: they are "falling" upwards in exactly the same kind of parabolic path followed by a thrown stone.”
