Today we're going to talk about, on your website, how much content is too much content? And the reason I want to talk about this, is content seems to be a part that clients struggle with most when they're doing their website and, you know, the problem is so many businesses want to tell everyone everything at once and it becomes really overwhelming for them to write their content. So the guiding principle that I would offer you is it's better to get a slow yes than a fast no. What do i mean by this? Your goal is to give people enough information that they want to continue the conversation with you. You want to pique their interest but you have to be careful not to turn them off by flooding them with information so they end up
wrongly determining that they are mismatch for you, your products, or services.

A few guidelines as you're writing your website content: First, avoid
lengthy technical explanations. Unless you are an engineering resource site, or something like that, it's unnecessary to go into heavy levels of detail, at least on the first level of a site (and I'll talk a little bit more about that.) Because I want you to consider layering information. What that means is, maybe the first time someone opens a page on a particular topic there are a couple paragraphs. That's approachable- two, three paragraphs of information. If I want to read more, maybe we have a feature on the website - and you can talk to your tech team about this - that expands and offers more information when they click to read more. Or add a PDF download, or have a video for further information. The point is, you
can have a lot of information on your site but it's about parsing it out so we don't overwhelm them all at once. Position yourself as an expert on your site - so yes, you want people to understand that you know a lot and that they can count on you as a resource. At the same time, you want to explicitly create a call to action that reminds them that they don't have to navigate this information alone. Whether it's talking to your professional team or, if you sell products, customer service. While websites are wonderful to
interface with customers, we should remember that it is still a person on the other side of the screen. The foundation of any website strategy should be calls to action. What are the calls to action needs of your website? Build from there.
